Successfully Setting Goals - Part 7

Posted on Monday 14 April 2008

Last post I touched on "Lag" when goal setting. The other side of lag is momentum. It takes heaps of energy to get a train to start moving but once she is going look out! Momentum is that awesome state of reaping what you have sewn and if you have truly done the front end of your goal setting correctly the train will come it's just a matter of when not if.

The other great by product of momentum is confidence in the process of goal setting: the act of creating an idea in thought and holding that thought until it literally manifests into reality. When a goal begins to manifest and you start to see the result of momentum this in turn will create more momentum. This is due to the energy burst we get when a goal starts to push through the surface.

It really is awesome stuff and I am passionate about getting you to see that you truly can create what ever you can imagine. You have to pay the price for that mind you but if you have truly asked yourself what it is you want in your life and you have gotten clear about it, you're obviously willing to do what it takes, right?

As it turns out good intentions aren't enough. Intention has to be pushed forward by action and maintaining forward action can get a little tough when old patterns and life get in the way (that's the price: we have to grow beyond our self imposed limitations). Stay tuned to hear more about these potentially crippling factors in future posts.

KEEP GOING. I can hear that train a cum'n!

Cheers, Richard

Successfully Setting Goals - Part 6

Posted on Thursday 3 April 2008

Goals don’t always just appear. What I mean is a lot of people get discouraged when they goal set and it doesn't just work out or they don't complete a goal with in there desired time frame. I have personally battled with this also and I'm pretty sure I'll be challenged by it again. It's called "lag".

The problem is in the trusting or the believing. This is because often we can't see the result but it is brewing. Just like the seed under the soil making its way to the surface to eventually break through, so to do our goals. It truly is inevitable as long as you water and care for your goals.

This happened to a friend the other day. He had been looking for a rental property in a new town for about a month with no luck. The thing was he left his job as a self employed glass blower to take up a teaching position as a university lecture. He rented the house out he left and he and his family where staying with a friend of a friend until a house was found. Now it may not sound like much but I can assure you he was stressed out and he was doing everything in his power to make it happen but nothing would shift. When I met with him he told me all about it and he was ready to pack it in. I just listened and supported him but I was thinking, "Just hold on mate it will break through". I didn't say that to him because he had heard it a million times. Well I left him pretty sure he was going back home. I heard from him the other day, he stuck with it just that little bit longer and the seed burst through the surface!

"Lag" is a part of any goal. The trick is being able to "recalibrate" your self. This simply means clear out and reset. We all need to let of a bit of steam, have a shoulder to cry on or someone to kick us up the bum and of we go doing what it takes to reach our goal. Now I know that can be easier said than done sometimes but so often that's the difference.

It's the person that will get up one more time to have a go that accomplishes what they set out to do. Don't get me wrong it's not about bashing your head against a brick wall, sometimes you need to use a jack hammer other times you need a ladder or just walk around. Almost all but the shortest term goals have a lag factor. Don't panic, trust that it is brewing because if you stay connected, focused and on track it WILL come!

Successfully Setting Goals - Part 5

Posted on Wednesday 2 April 2008

Goal setting successfully is as much about the "how to set goals" nut's and bolt's part as it is about setting up our LIFE for goal success.

Self motivation doesn't come easy to everyone. The idea of creating the life you really want remains just that for many, an idea. It's not enough to write a few goals out and put up a vision board in your room/office. With out "appropriate action" our goals will never be realized.

If we have good energy levels, feel fresh and ready to go each day we can get into a flow and really take huge action. Dragging ourselves out of bed loathing the day ahead of us will disperse our energy. It's not about bouncing of the walls everyday. Some days can be tough, even for those people who seem to have boundless energy and enthusiasm.

It's important to first be able to distinguish between energy giving and energy taking situations, so here is a list.

ENERGY TAKING: Stress, poor relationships, cluttered environment, negative environment, unbalanced lifestyle, poor health, lack of money, negative people, interpreting events as bad, low standards, poor diet.

ENERGY GIVING: Having money, smiling, loving relationships, nature, yoga/meditation, pets, sex, success, knowledge/learning, having fun/laughing, oxygen, exercise/fitness, recognition/significance, overcoming challenges, positive outlook, lighter colors, contribution, music, holidays.

Get yourself a piece of paper and jot down any thing that comes to mind as you read each of the areas under energy taking, then do the same for the energy giving list. If you find that there are energy taking situations occurring in your life, it's going to be difficult to channel the necessary energy into your goals. Look into these areas because they can really hold your goal setting back. It's difficult to be persistent and hang in their if you have no energy.

Successfully Setting Goals - Part 4

Posted on Tuesday 1 April 2008

I have to say creating a "Vision Board" is a real fun thing to do. The great thing about them is they work! When used in conjunction with the other steps I talk about in these posts a vision board really helps to anchor your dreams down in to reality.

So what is a Vision Board I hear you say? Well it's exactly that; a vision of what you’re going for. It is your goals manifested in picture form. All you need to do is grab a variety of magazines that appeal to you and begin flicking. Your job is to find those pictures that resonate with you and fit the goals that you have previously written. Once you have cut them out just paste them onto a piece of card. You can also place pictures of your self in there to add to the connection of your vision and your rightful place in it.

The idea is to connect with your Vision Board at least daily. Stand in front of it with your goal card and read out aloud your goals. The more you can induce positive feelings the more your subconscious will take notice. This is a long term exercise. You want to make it such a habit that you begin to believe it to be true. Be sure to place your Vision Board where it's the first thing you see in the morning when you wake up and the last thing you see before you go to sleep.

I also wanted to mention that sometimes this exercise can be met with a bit of resistance and skepticism. If you're feeling that and have your internal voice saying something like "how the hell is cutting out a few pictures going to help me create the life I want?" All I can say is have a go! I have seen and personally experienced the positive effects of a Vision Board. You've got nothing to loose, apart from a few magazines.

It's my experience that for this to really work you need to believe that we really do create our own reality and what we think today will eventually manifest it self in our life if we continue to believe it. Whether we believe it or not the power of thought will continue to shape our lives because it is a constant law. But if you can SEE that fact and really believe it then you will be compelled to start creating the life YOU want not the one that seems to be dictated to you.

Goal Setting Successfully - Part 3

Posted on Friday 28 March 2008

So you’re clear about whom and what you want in your life, how you want each area to look and feel and you have written your goals out based on the S.M.A.R.T.I.E method as described in my previous post. (I hope!) So know we need to scale each goal down to be able to fit on to one piece of card. Something you can take with you and connect with twice a day.

A simple piece of card about 12cm by 12cm with all the different areas in life you have set goals for on one side. Leave a few lines below each title to write your goals. You can put some inspirational quotes on the other side or anything that inspires you.

An example for the area of health might be: HEALTH: I am so happy that I have lost 2 kilograms and my diet is full of fresh healthy foods. I look and feel great. Your "goal planner card" is written as if you have already achieved your goal/s. This is so through repetition your subconscious will be infused with your goals and will begin to attract to you everything you need to achieve your goals.

So you should have a long version of each goal with all the specifics based on the S.M.A.R.T.I.E method and now this short version that is quick and easy to review twice a day where ever you may be.

What you want to do is read your goals allowed at least morning and night everyday. If you have distilled them down so as to fit onto a piece of card that you can carry with you it should only take a minute or two to connect with your goals. The more you can connect with seeing, smelling, touching and feeling the end result the better.

An example that my partner I use daily is to read our goals aloud while connecting with our "vision board" (I will talk about this in detail in my next post).

One goal we want to achieve is to own our dream house. Once we connect with all the great feelings of being in our house we meditate on it.When ever we get the chance we also look at houses in our favorite area that are for sale. We walk around, touching, smelling and feeling as if it is our house. It's great fun too!

Again the reason for doing this is to 1. Connect with what you want, 2. To saturate your subconscious with what you want via all your senses. The more sensory stimulation you can bring into it the better. I can't stress enough just how transformational these steps will be to your life. The key is to make it a HABIT. You have to replace what you are currently attracting into your life with what you REALY want in your life!

Goal Setting Successfully - Part 2

Posted on Thursday 27 March 2008

The next step is to take what you have written and follow some specific steps to make them into solid goals. A great way to do this is to use what's called the S.M.A.R.T.I.E system to treat each goal. So take each goal and apply the following seven steps.

1) Make your goals specific. Use time frames.

2) Make them measurable. So you can assess them and change accordingly.

3) Make them attainable. If you can't SEE yourself achieving the goal you won't attain it.

4) Make them realistic. Over estimating and under estimating what you're capable of will cause you to either fail or not stretch yourself. Find the balance.

5) Make them tangible. You should be able to feel, touch and picture them.

6) Inspirational. If they don't inspire you, you will run out of steam.

7) Emotional. The more emotion you can attach to your goals the quicker you will manifest them. This is done by visualizing yourself already having achieved your goals.

So hopefully you have Clarity and Balance from the first exercise in part 1 and you have grounded your goals by following the seven steps above. Next comes focusing, staying connected to your goals and following through. I will cover these crucial steps in my next post on Successfully Setting Goals.

Goal Setting Successfully - Part 1

Posted on Thursday 20 March 2008

The first stage of successful goal setting is all about CLARITY and BALANCE. What is it that you want to change or achieve? And is it in keeping with who you are and the rest of your life?

A great exercise to play with is to write each of the following headings: Health, Family, Career/business, Financial, Spiritual, Intellect, Social, Relationship, Things I would love to do (and any other title you would like to include) Write each title down with enough room for a paragraph or two.

The purpose of the exercise is to write how you would like each area of your life to LOOK and FEEL. Take no more than a few minutes on each title. An example for health might be: I have so much energy and enthusiasm for life since I have lost weight and stopped smoking, food tastes better and I can exercise without coughing and wheezing.

Make sure you write about the look and feel. The idea is to let yourself see and feel the result of what it is you want. Don't worry about the how at this stage, that will just get in the way. There can be a lot of resistance around this type of exercise. If you feel this way I really hope you will do it anyway!

Procrastination. Know You Can Overcome It-Here’s How

Posted on Tuesday 18 March 2008

Successful Time Managers Overcome Procrastination

Do you battle procrastination, or the 'putting off' of a perceived unpleasant task even though you have the ability and the time to obtain those goals right now? If you're the same as every other human being it is likely that you do. From pressing the snooze button when the alarm goes to avoiding tax, we're all guilty. But feel guilty no more! Or at least realise guilt is a useless emotion and it's not helping you to be where you really want to be. Or how about this: just try putting off feeling bad for the moment.

That's right-procrastinate! You can afford to feel good because knowledge is power. If you know you're procrastinating, you're a big part of the way to being able to fix it. It's all about self-awareness. Start with learning what is happening and knowing how to react when you begin to procrastinate. What are you feeling at the time?

When you realise that you are procrastinating or about to, you can recognise this, stop it and get back on track to better managing your time.To get over procrastination, you generally need to explore what options will work for you. Not everyone will experience the same type of benefits here, so look for the type of benefit that will work for you.

Motivate yourself with rewards. Many people enjoy being rewarded and an unwanted, unpleasant but important task is definitely a reason for you to become motivated. Pick a reward that will work for you. For example, "I'm just going to finish this page and then I'm going to make myself a cuppa."

Always know you're not expected to know all the answers and it's okay to ask for help. You may also want to put yourself in a position for someone else to push you and motivate you. If you are someone that does well with time limits or you need someone to come in and ask how things are going, recognise this and ask for some guidance.

Try visualising the end result of what you are wanting to achieve. It may also be useful to think about what the negative consequences may be if you don't get on and complete the task. Then remember how good you will feel when it is done.

If you find you are feeling overwhelmed and stressed before you start to go off task, see if there is someone you can talk to either in person or on the phone for a quick call to listen to you and remind you that you are indeed very capable.

Then break down the task into bite sized pieces. Number the tasks in order of priority even just for that one day. You may decide it would be more useful to actually put some of the easier tasks first on the list in order to feel good that you are moving towards your goal.

Try sticking some positive affirmations in view that help you to gain perspective. My favourite is "for every problem there is a solution." Hard to remember when you're in the midst of overwhelm and procrastination!

Successfully Setting Goals - Famous Quotes

Posted on Friday 7 March 2008

Hi everyone just wanted to post these inspiring quotes I came across about setting goals.

Goals are not only absolutely necessary to motivate us. They are essential to really keep us alive. Robert H. Schuller

Many people fail in life, not for lack of ability or brains or even courage but simply because they have never organized their energies around a goal. Elbert Hubbard

You don't have to be a fantastic hero to do certain things - to compete. You can be just an ordinary chap, sufficiently motivated to reach challenging goals. Edmund Hillary

Man is a goal seeking animal. His life only has meaning if he is reaching out and striving for his goals. Aristotle

Without goals, and plans to reach them, you are like a ship that has set sail with no destination. Fitzhugh Dodson

Let me tell you the secret that has led me to my goal: my strength lies solely in my tenacity. Louis Pasteur

If you're bored with life — you don't get up every morning with a burning desire to do things — you don't have enough goals. Lou Holtz

My philosophy of life is that if we make up our mind what we are going to make of our lives, then work hard toward that goal, we never lose - somehow we win out. Ronald Reagan

The trouble with not having a goal is that you can spend your life running up and down the field and never score. Bill Copeland

Wow! The Elbert Hubbard quote really stood out for me. It really is crazy how our attention gets pulled here and there. The demand for our attention is getting greater and greater in these times.

I’ve seen in others and experienced a lack of moving toward what I really want all because of a lack of organized energy around goals.

I hope these quotes help you on your journey to create what and who you really want in your life.

Cheers, Richard

Manage Your Time - Accomplish More

Posted on Friday 4 January 2008

THE SECRETS OF SUCCESSFUL TIME MANAGERS

A Step By Step Guide to Taking Control of Your Time

Time is our most valuable resource. Regardless of anything else in life, time is the one element that we have a finite amount of. Consider this fact: the most successful of business people today have the same amount of time in their day as you do!

The only difference is their knowledge and practice of key skills to manage their time properly. When you learn what these are you too can accomplish more in your everyday life than you ever thought possible.

Time management is not about taking up more of your precious time, it is simply about making better decisions and allocating the time you have in a more directed way so you can achieve better results in your day. If you are feeling overwhelmed in your life, then read on for some practical tips that you can do right away to become a successful time manager and maximize every hour of your day efficiently by taking control of your time!

  • Make a decision right now to be nice to yourself and know that you can not possibly accomplish everything all at once. Know that you are doing your best and that is good enough!
  • Relax your mind by taking three deep breaths right now. When you interrupt your mind from it's frantic, overwhelmed state you will be able to see what is best for you to do right now. (And in this case it might be to just keep reading;-)
  • When it comes to deciding what is the most important thing to accomplish at this moment, listen to what your senses and your gut are saying.  No matter how overwhelmed your mind is, your body always knows best if you're listening.
  • Make a list. Get everything you need to accomplish down on paper where you can clearly see what is in front of you. Then make decisions about their priority by numbering each task from the most important to the least. Now you can see a way forward.

  •  Get a planner and make your plan! Plan what you need to accomplish in blocks of time. (You may want to use a timer so you stick to the times.) Once you have your plan, your mind is more clear and you are more likely to then achieve your goals and do away with frustration and feeling overwhelmed.

If you'd like to learn more about ways to really improve your lifestyle and confidence by taking control of how you manage the time you have, check out our Time Management Secrets e-book that you can download through our secure PayPal online ordering service right now!
